The Time Travels program of the Upcountry History Museum is a regional outreach effort designed to inspire learning through pre-visit lesson plans, museum visit programs and educational resources.

The Education Connection
The education program is one of the most unique and exciting experiences the Museum has to offer, designed to connect students and teachers with the rich history of the Upcountry. Classroom lesson plans and engaging Museum visit programs are based on the South Carolina state social studies standards for students in grades 3, 4, 5 and 8. Participation in this program offers students an opportunity to step out of the classroom and step into the past.

A Walk Through Time
The Upcountry History Museum will provide a broad display of regional history from the early 1700s to the present. Visitors will encounter life-size figures – among them a hog drover, a farm slave, a plantation wife, a mill owner and a mill worker – who will discuss their role in the region’s development. Interactive media will immerse the visitor in a manner far different from other area museums. Nearly full-size facades of vanished buildings house film, rear-projection video, sound, lights and hands-on experiences making a trip through the Upcountry History Museum a singular and uniquely rich experience.

Learning is a trip…

Pre-visit Lesson Plans
Cross-curricular lesson plans have been developed to provide teachers with a unique opportunity to not only to meet the state standards, but also to prepare their students for an exciting and productive learning experience at the Museum.

Museum Visit Programs
Structured programs will be offered to students in grades 3, 4, 5 and 8 providing an up-close encounter with the past. Museum visit programs revolve around exhibit activities specifically tailored for each grade level.

The History Lab component will create hands-on experiences students won’t soon forget.

Third Grade: An archeological dig searching for Native American artifacts from both the Cherokee and Catawba tribes.
Fourth Grade:  Assembling care packages for Civil War soldiers for delivery to the front, and receiving those packages as a soldier would at the front, writing a letter home to describe the contents and their condition.
Fifth Grade: Examining various real artifacts, including a gas mask and a haversack, of a Greenville soldier going overseas during World War One.
Eighth Grade:  Carding and ginning cotton bolls and examining sharecropping in Upcountry South Carolina.

The Exhibit component encourages students to investigate history through sound and light shows and informational panels in an organized scavenger hunt while touring the Museum.
