The doors are open and education is a top priority for the Upcountry History
Museum as it focuses on the growth and development of the Time Travels
Student Enrichment Program, a curriculum based education program funded by a
$20,000 donation from Wal-Mart. On 10/24/07, classes from Duncan Chapel Elementary became
the first elementary school to secure a reservation to experience the Time Travels program. Students enjoyed a field trip to the museum and experienced our region’s history
in a unique and special way. Not only did they learn that history can be
but thanks to Wal-Mart, each student got to go home with a brand new backpack.
“We want to use the Museum’s unique resources in a fun and engaging way to inspire
students and enhance their work in the classroom. Wal-Mart’s generous support
has allowed us to create a program that will boost social studies skills for thousands
of students,” says Upcountry History Museum director Pamela Meister.
The Time Travels program is designed to connect student and teachers with the rich history of
the Upcountry. This regional outreach program is incorporates classroom lesson
plans and engaging Museum visits that are based on the South Carolina State social
studies standards for 3
rd , 4
th , 5
th and 8
th grade students.
“Wal-Mart is proud to sponsor a program that allows us all see through the eyes
of these students just how engaging our own history can be, says Rob Green, Wal-Mart’s
market manager for the Greenville area.
“Touring through the museum with them, spending time with each exhibit, it’s
clear how the educators at the Upcountry History Museum have gone above and beyond
to ensure that the experience is fun as well as educational,” Green adds.
